People between 45 and 64 years old account for about 18% of COVID-19 deaths, and people under 45 years account for 2.8% of such deaths, according to the CDC’s data as of Aug. The CDC data shows that most people who have died from COVID-19, about 79%, have been people ages 65 and older. Experts say that during a pandemic, it’s difficult to determine survival rates - such rates are usually calculated for a longer period of time, rather than as a snapshot. The CDC issues provisional death counts for COVID-19, but that data should not be used to infer a survival rate. Of roughly 35.2 million confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States, around 614,300 people, or 1.7%, have died, according to Johns Hopkins University’s mortality data as of Aug 6. Most people who get COVID-19 will survive. Although the delta variant has slightly decreased the effectiveness of vaccines, experts still encourage vaccination as it provides a high level of protection against hospitalization and death. The CDC recommends the COVID-19 vaccines because they are safe and effective, even against the delta variant. On working with his older brother Wesley, Pettit says, “We get along really well. Pettit started his own consulting firm out of college before teaming up with his brother Wesley and Mark Daughters to found Interlaced in 2009, prior to starting Kandji in 2018. So that I think really got me interested in the idea of running my own business and extending this idea of how can I empower other businesses to be successful with Apple,” says Pettit. And at the time it was very rare to see a business that ran on Apple. I saw first hand the idea of a business running on Apple and the dynamics of what it takes to actually successfully deploy, manage and secure Apple devices within a business before it was widely popular to do so. “We were exposed to the idea of running our own business. He realized at a point that there was an opportunity to monetize that by starting his first business providing Apple IT support when he was a sophomore and continued it through high school. We knew it was growing quickly and we knew that the incumbents that existed, didn't have a focus on automation or experience. To meet the demand for software to automate the provisioning and management of Apple devices in the workplace, the founders sold Interlaced to Evergreen Services Group for an undisclosed amount in 2018 and began working on Kandji. And so, our job became a lot of manual redundant repetitive work, rather than just leveraging smart software to accelerate the work,” says Pettit. And doing that, we of course worked with a number of vendors that existed on the market and our observations were that number one, there was no one on the market that was focused on automation or experience. And so we built a reputation working for a lot of high growth technology customers that had internal IT and security functions, but their functions weren't really equipped to handle Apple at scale. “We had a lot of customers come to us in those early days and they said, ‘Hey, we're purchasing X number of Apple devices, but our internal IT department doesn't really have a plan.’ That's why they would come to us. The cofounders built that business up over the course of nine years. Certainly, there were partners that existed in the market to serve the need of IT organizations to help them manage their Apple devices at the time, but the Interlaced mission was to create the most operationally mature provider of Apple IT services nationally. ![]() Therefore, we have to know when the Chinese lunar months begin and end in 2021. This also isolates Debezium from impacting the production OLTP workload that the master CloudSQL instances are handling. Rather than having Debezium connect to dozens of microservice databases directly, we can connect to just a single database. This single Debezium cluster is an operational trick to make it easier for us to operate Debezium. Each CloudSQL instance replicates its data into the Debezium cluster, which consists of two MySQL machines: a primary (active) server and secondary (passive) server. We’ve set up a downstream MySQL cluster specifically for Debezium. These databases run in Google Cloud as CloudSQL MySQL instances with GTIDs enabled. The flow of data starts with each microservice’s MySQL database. This proposed architecture is what we’ve been implementing at WePay, and this post describes how we leverage Debezium and Kafka connect to stream our MySQL databases into Kafka. The write-up triggered a thoughtful post on Debezium’s blog about a proposed equivalent architecture using Kafka connect, Debezium, and Confluent’s schema registry. Their architecture involves a series of homegrown pieces of software to accomplish the task, notably schematizer and MySQL streamer. These included a discussion on how they stream MySQL data into Kafka. Last year, Yelp’s engineering team published an excellent series of posts on their data pipeline. Since Dolch created his lists in 1936, there are a two words on these lists that are rarely used in modern children’s texts: upon(2nd grade list) and shall (3rd grade list). This list includes about, clean, laugh, myself and together. The third grade list features many high frequency words that cannot be easily decoded by the reader and therefore must be memorized. Dolch’s second grade list contains more complex words such as always, before, which, would and your. ![]() The words placed on these two lists are not seen as often in children’s texts as those on the previous lists, but are still essential to reading grade level literature. This list includes nouns often used in children’s daily lives such as brother, sister, ball and goodbye as well as those used for special occasions that are particularly important to many youngsters (birthday, party, cake, Christmas, Santa Clause). It was designed to supplant the MySQL structure as an easier way to work with data. MongoDB is a document-based non-relational database management system. The driving difference is in the way each one is designed. In sum, these are both fundamentally open-source database management options, but that is where similarities end. Moreover, developers for both systems originally created these as open-source databases, where code is free for anyone to use and to distribute. Both MongoDB and MySQL enable organizations to distribute, modify or deploy cloud-native applications, for example. ![]() Web apps require a data foundation as database services to run successfully. There’s much about these two systems that are alike. To understand their unique differences, it’s helpful to understand their similarities, and then how their database schemas diverge. Businesses use the MongoDB database as a high-performance solution to update data more quickly in structure and information. MongoDB serves e-commerce and content serving sites, for example, that benefit from its flexibility and scalability. ![]() It stores data as MongoDB documents, which is the touchstone of its design.
